I mean Nazi Germany’s Heidegger had some really groundbreaking philosophy and cool aesthetics with their symbols and fashion; but the culture, values, and state itself was despicable. Cicero had great oration, but he was also a complete hypocrite against what he spoke while being a classist asshat that supported torturing slaves
100% completely agree. Main thing i’m getting at is that MOST ancient societies were completely deplorable, and i think it’s important that we’re able to understand each society in the context it’s in. like slavery, crucifixion, imperialism, the roman circus, religious persecution, etc are all bad AND arches and aqueducts and roman engineering in general is monumental.
I totally get appreciating the good little artistic tidbits, the Aeneid and stoicism are great, but a lot of ppl seem to have this weird glorification of Rome from a moral viewpoint as something to replicate, which is just entirely insane and psychopathic imo. It was a rotten society of mass murdering crazy people, and should not be held as any standard of governance or direction for those actually interested in living and perpetuating morally healthy lives
