As a white Man, I fear the way I talk to my mom infront of my girlfriend. My mom works in a hospital and has always been very crass and I tend to do the same around her because of that

As someone born outside US, I feel very uncomfortable addressing older people, people in respectable positions with their names or pronoun ‘you.’ I often use Mr, Mrs, their professional title as a show of respect unless they correct me otherwise
