Hi OP, the problem spans decades. The debt expanded since after World War Two and benefited the generations who owned assets since. As time passed the assets got more expensive to get when the wages buys less due to inflation. The 2000s was a transitory decade where generations graduating high school in and after that decade can’t get the same assets. It’s broken by design to benefit the ones who got the loans first.

This is why the debt needs to be erased and has happened in history before from ancient Israel to even ancient Egypt as examples. Japan in current times has experienced a lost generation due to their economy imploding since 1990 and under emergency assistance from their central bank since buying stocks directly. America I believe already has a lost generation.

The sad thing is Japan blamed the youth for being lazy for the lost generation but ignored the bad polices and the debt that doesn’t get repaid. I believe the same will happen in the US where a lost generation is declared and the youth will be the scapegoats while how and why the debt continues to rise gets ignored.

In the end the question is how should society work and why expand the debt that cannot be paid back? Some argue this goes all the way back to the late 1800s where the US went astray and sought income taxes which was passed as law and eroded the tariffs overtime to what we see today.
