Yes! I literally feel like I have to prove to people I’m not scary and that’s not okay. Honestly being in Statesboro made me nervous because there’s an obvious prejudice.

I was 18 when a GROWN black man got mad and yelled at me because he was gonna bump into me and I got out of the way smh accusing me of being racist. Some people just love playing victim.

Its not unfair for people to be nervous when there is a disproportionate amount of violence coming from the black population. Is it right to think black people are bad generally? No. But is it understandable to be more nervous around them because they are significantly more likely to harm you? Yes. Most black people are good people but when you have repeated interactions and exposure to bad people who are black, you tend to get nervous. I don't think its right but I understand it completely

Yes. Everyday I overplay the nice guy just to prove that I’m “safe.” Smiling way too often. Opening doors unnecessarily. Changing the tone and inflection of my voice to match the person I’m speaking to. Overselling myself.

Hard disagree. Crime statistics around Black Americans are often distorted, especially when people treat arrests as proof of criminality rather than looking at arrests vs actual convictions, and systemic bias. Black Americans also make up about 50% of known exonerations, which says a lot about how often the system gets it wrong. Fear based on propaganda is harmful and invalid.

Our current policing system has deep roots in the control, surveillance, and imprisonment of Black people. So when people say they’re “afraid” of Black people because of the numbers, they’re often reacting to propaganda, not reality. The numbers are not neutral, and the fear is manufactured.
