honestly I agree with you but the only way to actually kill a tick is by burning it. they’re surprisingly resilient bugs but using fire is basically an instant death for it w minimal suffering

replying to this just for visibility, but if a tick is attached to you do NOT use fire to get it off. it takes several hours of being attached for a tick to inject diseased material into you, and if you distress it it would detach itself but not before injecting its diseases prematurely, always use needle nosed tweezers from the base or a tick key

I’d just like to say that EVERYTHING has a justification for being, everything that is living has a role in the ecosystem it lives in. Ticks are a main part of the diet of possums and many other animals, without them the whole ecosystem would be thrown off balance. It’s easy to say that bugs which are a nuisance to us have no purpose, but they really are important!

Burmese pythons also have a purpose?? that’s not their fault that they were smuggled into the US, but it also goes to show just how sensitive these ecosystem webs are since destruction happened where humans introduced them! And I was not specifically talking about “the life cycle for bugs”… I was talking about ECOSYSTEM cycles and webs. which you learn about in detail in like, fourth grade. but I guess you probably got held back that year or something 🤷‍♀️

possums don’t really eat ticks, there was like one poorly done study done that now everyone loves to quote. there’s significantly more evidence that possums don’t even like ticks.

This is not aimed at you cuz you’ve been mostly correct I’m just responding in general but like ticks aren’t abundant because they’re nuisances they’re abundant because we killed off deer predators and not they’re over populating which means ticks are overpopulating because of food abundance. I said this earlier in the thread and I’ll say it again: blame humans for fucking the food web up, not the ticks and deer for existing. If you want less ticks, let foxes and wolves be it’s not that hard 😭😭

If there wasn’t a point to its existence it would not have evolved to fill the niche it has. It’s not that hard to understand you are being purposefully dense. Yes we can cull deer populations and I think it is a good thing. However, we can also reintroduce natural predators and make attempts to restore what we’ve destroyed, even by just a little bit

The importance of an organism shouldn’t be decided by their value to humans because we aren’t the center of everything. Wildlife exists independently of us.
