Hey, I’m the boyfriend in this position. I dated my ex for about 3 years. We started running into this about 2 years in and I thought we worker through it. But right around our 3 year anniversary I finally got her on antidepressants and she realized she was a lesbian. It was just the emotional dependence which was keeping her with me.

No girl you do you! I broke up with my bf because a hotter guy in my class started liking me and I don’t regret it! Move up and leave your loser boyfriend behind for Chad!

I think in my case it was definitely better for me that she broke up with me. I think you can think about it. What made you attracted before where you aren’t attracted now? But if you truly think you have lost your sexual attraction to him and that’s for good (or it’s likely to disappear again), I personally think it’s best for both him and you that you go separate ways.

I really appreciate the genuine response, I feel like I may be in a similar spot to where your ex was. I feel very drawn to him in the way of not being alone, having someone but when it comes down to it. I’m unsure if he is that person, the love he has for me is something I’ve never experienced which is why I feel it is so hard to come to this conclusion. I know it will impact him greatly and I worry abt his emotions and feelings greatly as I don’t want to be the cause of them worsening..

Honestly I see a lot of parallels to the situation I was in. We were each other’s first serious relationship, so it was really hard to imagine not being with each other. She told me often how she wanted to get married. But I think in my case her severe depression played a big part in it. That was part of why she was so emotionally dependent on me and why I experienced a lot of my own mental health difficulties in that relationship.

For me, it made it a lot easier to move on. I was obviously torn up about it, but her depression coming under control plus the breakup meant I was under a lot less stress, and was able to pursue a new job across the country. It’s probably not as severe for him, but I would think about it in a similar way.

That being if you feel like you can’t see yourself staying in a relationship with him, and it is one where you both won’t be sexually fulfilled it’s not fair to either of you to keep yourselves stuck in something which won’t be good for you long term. If you break up, you free him up to be able to pursue the rest of his life (and yourself). I sometimes wish she had broken up with me two years in, I could have enjoyed my college experience more.

I will say that for me personally being broken up with for a lack of attraction is kind of one of the better reasons? I kind of desperately fought it for a bit until the full lesbian realization came. But it means that I didn’t do anything wrong. It was something out of my control. It meant from my end there wasn’t really anything to blame myself for, I just wasn’t a woman which is what she needed.
