Pick yourself up man, what’s done is done. There’s no use in wallowing in the mud. You say you’re going to graduate in 2027? That’s still one academic year before graduation. There are certification courses, boot camps, things you can write down as experience on your résumé. Hell, just bullshit your way through interviews, fake it till you make it. You fucked up, so what? Tons of people do. This isn’t the end of it.

Ok, real talk. I graduated and could barely code, I could read it pretty well, but writing it was hell on earth. Ended up getting a job managing a software implementation. I needed to know how to HTML code to design basic emails and forms, but like writing and understanding full OOP no, so yeah, work hard, but don’t scare yourself if you have only the basics down.

If it makes you feel better, you’re not alone I’m Currently retaking data structures because for some reason refused to do my work in that class last year. It’s summer and I still use AI a lot and I still need to fill out a self-questionnaire for ADHD that I got recommended by a psychologist 💀

You are only hurting yourself if you’re not using AI correctly, and as a person that is not even yet a junior, it can be hard to impossible to know what correct looks like. You can’t build good habits if you outsource all of them to a machine that doesn’t want you to think. I’m not tryna moralize, I just want to help you learn to prefer the slow road.

AI is a lot like social media. A little is super helpful when used in incredibly strategic ways, but a lot is a way to churn out nothing but garbage.

“A little” is not enough nuance. A 30 year Senior Developer can use an LLM to help knock out boilerplate and save time by replacing the work of a Junior Developer, but a Novice will never become a Junior, and never EVER become a Senior. By relying on AI to do the heavy lifting, they will never become strong. Even among senior developers there are still arguments over whether the de-skilling that’s happening (they’re getting rusty with the fundamentals) is worth the time they’re saving.

I want to be honest with you here: I like the idea of saving time and energy, but a Novice and even a Junior has no idea what “incredibly strategic” is. This cannot be good for us long-term.

Oh no 100% agree that using it to replace rolls is HORRIBLE and is leading to a huge problem in society where money doesn’t flow back to employees only business owners. However, using it as stack exchange 2.0 where you can google an answer and get extremely specific feedback on nuanced problems is incredibly powerful and helpful. That said, there’s a reason we teach web design in our art program, AI can’t figure out how to innovate because it only sees right and wrong answers.

Sure, but when turn by turn directions with google maps and gps units came on the scene, the ability to navigate the world without them dropped off precipitously. When Google Search became the norm, the ability to do research through indexicals in the real world disappeared. We are losing something intangible with LLMs, not just the ability to think for ourselves but the institutional ability to lean on each other and learn from each other. LLMs are going to literally destroy society.
