If you’re a total beginner, try Linux Mint.

adding to this: DON’T use ubuntu. it’s infinitely better than microslop but it’s still hella inconvenient cuz you can’t get into filesystem root and a common mistake made by beginners is assigning too small of a partition (40-50 GB) to the OS, which means you’ll basically never have space. i made this mistake and it sucked. also snap packages are fucking stupid and can fuck your personalized settings up and you can’t really get rid of them. so ❌ubuntu

You will 100% end up reinstalling Linux after your first attempt so it works best to try for a clean install on a different drive to save you the trouble of setting up a complex bootloader.

Wydm “can’t get into filesystem root?”

the operating system is already almost fully built, which makes it good for beginners, but because of this, it’s nearly impossible to delete useless parts of the OS that take up space or override your customizations. i moved to arch. it is so so SO much better than ubuntu. hell, mint is better than ubuntu.

oh yeah absolutely. it’s the how it’s installed in the first place that creates this issue for the user. not having any space left on your partition is a fucking nightmare

I wouldn’t refer to Ubuntu as “customizable” but I’m not gonna blame you for wanting that. Mint is the best implementation of a beginner Debian/ubuntu fork, for sure, and if someone never moves beyond it, they’ll be happy. If they’re ready to move beyond it, they likely already know what they want.

yeah lol i know that’s exactly what i’m saying. it’s not customizable because you can’t override what the system has in it already.

Which is kind of ironic considering it’s… Linux? For me the customizable is the point, but I guess that’s not what the consoomer focus of Ubuntu is about.
