The job market is fucking SHIT right now. Fast riser, hired into a manager role at Fortune 500, let go when they cut half the team. Been looking for work for the past 11 months. I set aside money cuz I saw things going sideways before they cut the team, but definitely feeling 12 ways fucked over right now. It’s definitely not you; and you’re not alone.

i’m a junior at a T20 school with a high ranked CS program (3% acceptance rate), I have built several ML models including a version of GPT from scratch as well as full stack web apps, and i was apart of ACM for a little while. i’m also DEI. i haven’t gotten even a single interview and i have applied to over 200 spots, some of which were apart of my institution and some of which would have me working for free for a no-name company. we are fucked.

You are competing with people with 10 plus years in industry willing to take a pay cut because all the F500 companies are laying off their employees. Job market is rough

Job Market is in a big “no hire, no fire” state it feels like. No one wants any turnover rate.

I go to a T10 college in general (idk how we rank in cs) I’ve had internship but i haven’t even had a single interview and I’m a 4th year. This time last year i had like a bunch of final rounds for internships. Idk what’s going on

lol employers don’t care about school rankings they care more about networking and if you know someone first, it sucks that you basically were lied to when applying to college

wait t10 cs undergrad is perfectly reasonable to say. but i feel like that statement indicates only two possible schools.

wait even T4s don’t have 3% acceptance rate (all around 3.5-4 at minimum) nor does any school on T10. tf, what school has that for cs lol

our overall acceptance for the entire university is listed as anywhere from 8-9% and for CS specifically for my year (2023) it was approx. 3.1%. for this past year i think it might have jumped up though since i’m fairly sure they increased admission. i didn’t check the rate for this past year tbh.

I mean it helps but it’s not like going to CMU guarantees a job, which I know some people believe

Like, there are 3 scenarios where your degree makes a difference. 1) You went to the same school as the hiring manager 2) You’re going to work at an org big enough that they actually try to recruit from top 10 (or know top 10). 3) You went to a “brand name school” Duke, Vassar, Colombia, ect.

Even brand name schools don’t matter anymore because there’s so many CS grads from them unless you REALLY stand out
