Can someone genuinely explain to me why the group of 5 gets a spot in the playoff

In 2017, UCF went 13-0 and missed the playoffs, and they won their bowl game. Thus, they claimed a natty. That revealed that without a G5 autobid, G5 teams would never be given a chance to probe themselves outside of exceptional circumstances (2021 Cincy)

That, and no one expected the pac12 to implode. Playoff was designed with P5 in mind, only for pac12 to disappear and now there’s an “at large g5 bid” to any g5 conference champ that’s ranked high enough…and then the ACC imploded
