The best part bout this whole ND autobid thing is that they might not even make the top 12 cuz they have to play the Canes and BYU, as well as SMU and Navy. Real chance we have eighteenth-ranked 9-3 Notre Dame and they’ll still complain about a snub1) ND basically operates as a 1 team conference, this gives them an opportunity at an “auto bid” which every other team except them and UConn have a shot at. 2) This rule would only come into play in very specific situations. ND would probably have to finish exactly #12 for this to ever have any effect (nobody would complain about a snub if they were 18 lol.) 3) It’s still 100% up to the committee, for example if they wanted Miami in this year they would’ve simply flipped ND and BYU.
4) Every single conference commissioner voted yes on this proposal. Agreement also gives auto bids to every power conference, they wanted to gain overall stability for the playoffs and thought giving ND some protection would be best. 5) It was a small part of bigger espn tv deal, and keeping ND happy was crucial for their new revenue sharing plan.
No just top 4. Really only relevant to the ACC/Big12 since I don’t see any world where SEC/BIG10 champ would be left out. Really thinking this whole deal was pushed hard by Jim Philips, getting an ACC auto bid + incentivizing ND to stay independent to prevent revenue sharing.
