2 G5s because 7-5 Duke won ACC and so was lower than the 2 G5s. And it’s not just the 12 best because bids go to the 5 highest ranked conference winners this happens across sports where conference/division winners get auto bids because winning the conference/division needs to be rewarded hence an autobid to the playoffs.
Leaving no room for smaller programs from G5 conferences to have a real shot. If you look at major league sports, there are systems in place to counteract this like a salary cap and getting higher draft pick. But for CFB it would be like if the worst team kept getting the last pick in the draft. So the G5 auto bids allow for schools from smaller conferences with less money get a chance to improve funding for thier conference. More funding = better teams and ... pt2
Makes it so it's not the same P4 teams every year. The problem with having it be the top 12 teams is that a G5 team is very unlikely to ever make it to one of the top 12 spots without funding to recruit better players. Just like no one wants to see the chiefs play in the playoffs every year, no one wants to see Georgia and Alabama every year. We need more Boise sts and JMUs
The problem with CFB compared to other sports is that how good a team is gonna be directly correlated with how big a program it is bc bigger programs get more funding to pay thier players and recruits better players. Because of this, the teams from the larger conferences (P4) are ALWAYS gonna be better. Making it to the playoffs = more money for your conference. This leads to a cycle where the bigger programs consistently do better so they get more funding... pt1
The auto bids allow them to have a real shot. More recognition means more players coming over in the transfer portal plus JMU and Tulane earned about 4 million for thier respective conferences just for being in the CFB. This extra money allows them better resources to fill those talent gaps
