You’re probably very young, but BCS bowls used to mean the same as a first round playoff win essentially they were so big, and bowl games as a whole meant 10x more. When the 4 team started it devalued everything a little and the 12 team has completely devalued bowl games. I’m old enough to remember when every week in CFB was the playoffs, shit was epic.
Bowl games don’t matter anymore because no one who is good enough to get drafted wants to play in an exhibition game where the only real effect it could have is a career altering injury. CFB is a business and a professional league and it’s insane to imply that only the players can’t treat it as such. Also even if I never saw the games during the bcs (which I did by the way)era it doesn’t change what is now.
To be fair though, nothing about the bowls themselves really changed to cause players to start sitting out. They’ve always been “exhibition games” to a certain extent but winning one used to reflect really well on the program and help them recruit and such. It’s just the addition of all the transfer portal/playoff stuff that I think really disincentivizes players and teams from caring about them
