FYI, the top 5 conference champ AQ’s in the playoff structure was added to protect what was then the “P5”, while hoping to prevent an anti-trust claim from the other conferences. Then the Pac12 imploded and the ACC is collapsing too, so here we are.

The way it was designed, Oregon would’ve gotten an AQ spot allowing another at large team, keeping JMU out and probably ND gets in. The ACC just plain shit itself, so the AAC still would’ve got in no matter what. So if you want to blame anyone for the playoffs being a mess blame the “P” schools and conferences for being greedy and it blowing up in their faces.

It pretty much happened at the same time. PAC 12 was part of the negotiations of the expansion before they broke up.
