There’s a couple reasons I did that: 1. Big 10 is a far better fit than the SEC. Immediate rivalry potential with Iowa and Illinois 2. They would improve competitive balance between east and west Big 10 teams 3. Them or Iowa State are the most geographically removed from the rest of the Big 12, but Iowa State has better preserved rivalries in the Big 12 4. Their best rivalry game with Kansas can be preserved as a protected non-conference game like Georgia-Georgia Tech
Nebraska has far more history with the Big 12/Big 8, and a non-conference rivalry can be preserved between them and at least one Big 10 team. Northwestern I understand but their cultural fit in the Big 10 isn’t great and they also hamper competitive balance. Pennsylvania is not the Midwest and I think Penn State is a better fit with northeastern teams.
Columbia, Missouri is fundamentally culturally midwestern, and someone had to go from the Big 12 to make the conferences even. Like I said the rivalry with Kansas could still be preserved annually, but unfortunately all those other rivalry games haven’t been regularly played since Missouri joined the SEC. I know this isn’t an absolute slam dunk, but it’s a better fit that the SEC
The Rutgers rivalry is pretty newly forced so the B1G can justify adding both of them, but Maryland has tons of history with UVA, Duke, NC State, UNC, and so on. They could play a couple games with history in Penn State and WVU, or have every game meaningful in the ACC. (Plus Penn State and WVU could be OOC.)
