The point here is that it’s not an at institution with athletic power. NY used to have CCNY and NYU in the early CBB days and has Cuse and St. John’s as private schools. The difference being these schools don’t have year round athletic significance because NY moved to pro sports. Boston, DC, and Philly have SOMETHING… NY really doesn’t…

NYU is private so they would never be considered flagship. Cuse and St. John’s same thing. Buffalo and Stony Brook are the flagships and they are part of SUNY system. Flagship doesn’t have anything to do with sports. They’re typically the best at sports in a state but athletic success is not part of being a flagship university

I’m making the point that people ignore the distinction when it benefits brand size… a la USC over Cal/UCLA, ND over IU, Boise over Idaho, BC over UMass, UNLV over UNR, Providence over URI, BYU over Utah (until the last 15 years)

Okay but that’s a different argument. Bigger brands sure but the fact is that a private university can never be a flagship. The flagship term is only for public universities. USC, ND, BC, Providence, and BYU are all private

I’d like OP to clarify because I believe that is the argument being made. Buffalo has the best ratio of recent success to brand relevance (sorry Syracuse nobody cares about you anymore) somehow and the fact that it is the Largest D1 SUNY (LIU sneaking up though), that is the argument

And my point is that you’re both misunderstanding what a “flagship university” actually is. Also, LIU, like Syracuse, is a private university and is not a part of SUNY or CUNY

I’m also really not trying to be a dick so sorry if it’s coming off like that. I’ve just been in this convo before whenever an CFB IG account posts a map of flagship colleges and all the private school fans get pissed off because they don’t realize what a flagship actually is
