Yep. Not so much outright refusal, but it was just…normalized to me not to pursue my health concerns. My family doctor was dismissive of my problems and my parents just accepted that instead of seeking a second opinion. It took becoming an adult and taking control of my own healthcare to realize I was a victim of medical neglect for much of my life.

yes but for financial reasons 😭 in our family we don’t go to the doctor unless we’re dying

buddy you’re medically emancipated at like age 13 or something, you can make your own appointments now. take public transport if that’s the barrier, or ask the doctor’s office if they have one available.

and eight years worth of migraines going unchecked can cost someone their eyesight, cognitive function, or their life… i’d understand for a common cold, back pain, or even a broken finger, but ignoring nearly a decades worth of migraines is NOT normal.

doctors aren’t like a pre-pay service thing… you can go to a doctor and get assessed then pay incrementally later. plus, if she doesn’t have income, she absolutely can qualify for Medicaid. the longer you wait, the more expensive it will be. if i had waited longer to get my weird mole checked out, the skin cancer would have spread to my lymph nodes and caused full body symptoms, preventing me from working to earn a living & potentially cutting my life expectancy short… IT IS WORTH IT.

I did not have money, we lived on a military base (children can’t leave without parents), I had no care, nearest doctor was 40 mins away. I’ve finally been diagnosed but my parents refused for 8 years

Military doctors work different, we can’t see them without our parents & I didn’t have access to my insurance card or medical records until I turned 18

oh my fucking god, that almost sounds like a government conspiracy. i knew healthcare and even groceries work differently on military bases but jfc i didn’t realize you were also considered gov’t property if you’re a kid on the base???

we aren’t considered gov’t property, it’s just not allowed for us to leave without parental consent (atleast the base where I was) you could leave for work if you had a car but you couldn’t just walk off or catch a bus off base without a guardian. It was a safety thing, same thing with the doctor, doctors can’t treat minors without parental or guardian consent.

Your insurance will still send billing info to your parents and if your parents are shitty enough they will actively prevent you from continuing care if they find out you went anywhere.
