ugh I empathize so so so bad. I have a ton I wanna say but I’ll try not to make an essay out of it I’m living with rheumatoid arthritis, idk if we have the same diagnosis or not but I’m very familiar with joint pain and with doctors telling me to lose weight to improve my symptoms. I lost over 100 pounds but in many ways my health is actually worse than ever. nearly Everyone, including medical specialists, drastically oversimplifies the relationship between size and health

I’m not saying it’s untrue that, for instance, the “pressure” on my knees caused by being a heavier weight was bad for them. but that’s literally just One out of an extremely complex range of many influencing factors. weight loss didn’t do anything to reduce how much my white blood cells attack my joints! it didn’t even improve my diabetes symptoms. at the very least, please try not to blame yourself when it’s possible that being a smaller size wouldn’t even make a noticeable difference for you

At least your doctor would say something for RA, my RA factor is in the 170s and they say it will go down when I lose weight I hate it

oh my god??? I’m pretty sure that’s straight up scientifically inaccurate? like, your immune system obviously doesn’t just produce rheumatoid factor in response to weight, and my understanding is that if it’s THAT high, the potential reduction via weight loss would be so tiny as to barely be noticeable. that’s fucking evil, I am so so sorry

if at all possible it might be worth trying to switch to a different rheumatologist? IME there’s a lot of cruel & incompetent rheumatologists out there, but someone who tells you your rheumatoid factor would decrease substantially if you lost weight sounds to me like an *extreme* quack

in the entire state??? how nightmarish, that seriously shouldn’t even be legal—I’ve heard of at least one other person ending up in a similar position before though just from talking to other disabled & chronically ill people god I wish I had any useful advice whatsoever, I’m legit horrified on your behalf. the shit you’re navigating is a type of human rights violation, your size or weight are absolutely Not the problem

I hurt for you so bad, wtf. as if dealing with chronic pain, ableism and fatphobia in daily life wasn’t miserable enough all on its own

Thanks and yeah I’m from North Carolina and have medicaid and they split Medicaid into about 20 different types and I’m on one type that’s only accepted at that one place and it’s about a 4 Hour drive away from my house as well, that’s why I’m over here trying to do nursing

Medicaid is divided into different “plans” in my state too, I really don’t understand the specifics. I swear insurance is set up in such an unnecessarily crazymaking way even in the most progressive or wealthiest parts of the US major respect for pursuing nursing out of genuine care though. people who know what it’s like to deal with the worst of this shit are imo the best emotionally-equipped for the job. that empathy literally saves lives
