My approach depends on what it is I have to do and how important. If it’s a time crunch, I try to bribe myself. I give myself little rewards and/or turn on some sort of distraction. Either music or have a show playing. It gives me something to focus on other than the pain worsening. If I have some time flexibility, I take a nap. I typically wake up feeling a little better and am more likely to be motivated right after one.
I think I just try to find ways to make me feel better in the moment. When I lived in dorms, I used to just soak my feet in hot water but now I just take baths while I do work if I’m in a lot of pain. And like if you’re worried, you’ll fall asleep if you lay in your bed, maybe you take a bunch of pillows and just sit up on the floor so that it removes that association with sleep, but you’re still really comfy. That or like online coworking zooms for motivation That type of stuff helps me!
I’m in a really strict grad program so I don’t have a lot of leeway and so the way I look at it is just like “my body can be in pain at the kitchen table doing homework, or it can be warm in slightly less pain in the bathtub doing homework” so it’s kind of like negotiation I guess. I don’t know that mindset of like bargaining with my body works for me.
