I want to do more but I think I need a wheelchair (dizziness, can’t walk for long periods) and was wondering the best place to get a battery operated one?

Ask PT/OT if you have one, but generally there are clinics just for wheelchairs and equipment, check if a hospital near you has one

A manual with push assist or a full power chair? Also what state are you in? I got my chair w/o insurance (they wouldn’t cover it, too much hassle) and it was actually really easy

Check Facebook marketplace, eBay, local senior centers/council on aging, and sometimes Elks lodges will help people get wheelchairs

Then a power chair will be crazy expensive

Also it’s not recommended to get a wheelchair without professional input but that’s your own risk to take

Oh it was something we discussed before I lost my insurance if my ability to function declined

I’m not sure. I can’t really turn my head or move much without the possibility of passing out, throwing up, or both

Ah I have been. But even straight up just push wheelchairs of like $150 😮‍💨 and I’m currently on unemployment bc I can’t afford to stop unemployment to tried to afford SS. Idk the whole system is so fked

Yeah it really sucks :/ I’ve never been employed bc of disabilities so I don’t qualify for SSDI or unemployment and my parents somehow make “too much money” for me to qualify for SSI. Keep looking hopefully you find something!🫶

If you can’t turn your head, I don’t think you’d be safe to drive a wheelchair. It’s like driving a car through a crowd of pedestrians. You have to be able to look where you’re going. It can also be pretty bumpy. If you pass out while seated, you’d need a lot of safety features to make it safe. You’d need an excellent chair fitter to make this advisable.

Yeah that’s something I was mulling over too. I just miss my independence— at least a bit of it

If you have a wheelchair supply store in your area, they may allow you to test drive a chair (or multiple to see what model you like best!). They let me do this when/before I bought mine (like a car test drive) but pay close attention to every emotion and feeling, not just the positive ones. Maybe they would have some solutions too like mirrors or something! Just loop in the right experts! Sorry you’re going through this and hope you find a work about!
