Has anyone ever had an endoscopy. I have to get one next month. I don’t know if this is true but I’ve heard that it’s possible to be under anesthesia but awake. And for some reason I would prefer that. Does anyone know if that’s true?

I’m not aware if that’s true or not. I’ve had several endoscopies and all of them I’ve been completely unconscious. They’ve all been pretty quick like 30 minutes and the worst thing is just having a sore throat afterwards

There are numerous levels of sedation you can choose! When I had mine I went for anesthesia though because they told me if you’re a super high anxiety person your body could fight the sedation and they’ve had people try to grab the scope in the middle of the procedure. Not saying this to scare you just sharing what I was told! Being knocked out was really anxiety provoking for me but I ultimately decided that it would be better for me so I could go in then wake up and it would be over

i’ve only heard of twilight sedation for colonoscopies but it doesn’t hurt to ask your provider!

I looked up things that could go wrong with twilight sedation which obviously was not smart. I saw something about the possibility of getting tears in the esophagus. Now I feel more like I should be asleep but then at the same time I’m afraid the same thing could possibly still happen while asleep. I’m afraid if there’s a tear in the esophagus I won’t be able to sing anymore. But I’m sure I’m probably just being paranoid. And thank you to everyone who gave advice.

Nah they just knock you out unless you specifically want to be conscious, even if you were awake you wouldn’t remember it I’ve had two now and I just go back to the OR and fall asleep then wake up in a different room and eat some goldfish crackers and go home nbd

That doesn’t sound too bad. I’ve heard some people say that you can and some people say you can’t. I think I just don’t like the idea of being put under if being awake is even an option.

I get that but I’ve probably had 5 endoscopies at least and never had an issue. To be honest I don’t know if your throat will relax enough if you’re awake. Just ask the doctor what they plan to do

Yeah that makes sense. I think there is some kind of throat spray they use to relax your throat but I don’t know if that’s actually true or not.

I had to do a lottttttt of processing with my therapist thing before and after about being unconscious because my provider initially was going to do just sedation but I knew I needed to just be knocked out and for it to be over with (I had a dual procedure endoscopy/ colonoscopy)

getting put under can be nerve racking but i’ve been put to sleep for upper and lower endoscopy and it’s very relaxing and i find it enjoyable even. i think it’s natural to worry about worse case scenario to mentally prepare for it, it’s kinda like pre experiencing the stress so if it does happen you’ll feel less stressed. but they are very routine procedures that are low risk.

That makes me feel so much better. You didn’t scare me at all. If I feel I’m around a good team I’m usually pretty calm. If I walked in and they were being all rude and saying things then that would cause more anxiety. So far the people I’ve talked to have been pretty nice.

This has made me feel so much better about being unconscious. Thank you!

I called today as I thought they won’t let me do it awake. The nurse I talked to made me feel so much better about being asleep for it.

That doesn’t sound too bad I did want to be conscious but they said I can’t but now I feel much better about being knocked out.
