I don’t play iRacing, but I think the reason it’s popular is the high price tag filters out a lot of casual players who won’t take it very serious. It’s like paying for a really high end gym, the actual facility and equipment may not be worth the price, but there’s a lot fewer of those pesky poor people that crowd the machines.
