Books with smut in them should be wrapped in stores just like they do with manga that has smut.

idk what this references but there should be some kind of warning on the cover so that someone doesn’t buy it and get surprised about the contents (especially when it comes to younger people buying books or parents buying books for their kids)

if there’s illustrations yeah but otherwise i don’t think a wrap is needed, a written warning but i feel like most kids would walk right past a larger smutty chapter book unless they say it was inaccessible for some reason. with a manga a kid could think it was just a comic and get traumatized/exposed to something they shouldn’t see in moments. Doesn’t seem as likely with a novel

I don’t think that in necessary. Maybe just a mark on the cover

I hate wrapped books in stores. I need to read the first 2 pages to know if I like the author’s voice

some are obvious but a lot are not. especially those romance books with the carton covers (idk i haven’t read one but pretty sure those have smut i think). I mean TOG had smut (not too much but still) later in the series and I was initially gifted that series when I was 11 so..

if a manga contains material inappropriate for children its wrapped in clear film

its more that i would like to see a more physical, unavoidable warning that the book has adult content. romance books with cartoony covers look very unassuming to children and parents. i also dont think the manga example is very different from a kid skimming through a book at the store and finding inappropriate content in it.

That’s fair, I still think it’s less likely but I know there are a lot of kids who like chapter books and as you said the eye catching covers.
