Yeah no problem. I hate it too, it just feels like history is being destroyed in favor of convenience and technology. We’re in the early stages of Fahrenheit 451 I swear to gods

My library sells donated books for dirt cheap, even rare books. They use that money to fund the library for public programs.

Most libraries do that. But if you talk to them or go in the back they have a trashcan full of books that going to be recycle. Most libraries i been at if the cover is mess up or a page is rip they will get rid of it.

They’re cutting the pages and rendering the books unusual afterwards in order the speed up the process. The destruction is unnecessary and concerning either way

The books they destroying are books that going to be recycle anyway. I hate ai as much as the next person but acting like this this is the worst thing ever is misleading and just going to cause people take it less seriously in the future

…which they are clearly using to train AI. #6 has a point, and also not. The thing I don’t get, and maybe this is the info I am missing. I don’t see anything indicating that these books are rare, and I also don’t see anything indicating these books are so old and degraded that they’re about to be recycled anyway. I only see that they’re pre-2022, pre- chat gpt. Again, I could only read the yahoo article which itself looked ai generated to me, so like. Yeah 😅

It is being overall dramatically I search multiple article and they not destroying rare books in the sense thst it was an 1700 limited edition book but they are trying to scan more unknown books so books written by your mom that noone bought and sold 10 copies. So it is rare in the sense that it might be the only copy but only because noone is buying it. The reason why they destory and only making one copy because they don't own the right to the book so they just making sure they can't be sued

Rare and antique books are not usually discarded because of relatively minor flaws. I work in a special collections & archives, the VAST majority of our collection is books in some degree of disrepair because that is simply a symptom of antiquity, and when we get duplicate copies we don’t need they are sent to others who need them. Most libraries understand the significance of irreplaceable items
