Cosplaying good Vorin Men from Roshar (I’m so sorry if you don’t get this reference) Actual answer, I think it’s a mix of the usual burnout of reading by force through school and systemic mysogeny. We view certain book genres as “more feminine” so we don’t read them and tend to lean towards “manly” things like sports books and those like business advice books. Also lack of whimsy. Not everything needs to be productive

i think it’s SO FUNNY cause men used to be the ones who wrote and read and it was wrong for a woman to do so and the world saw it as not a woman’s profession and now it’s like…. only women reading XD exaggerating for the point of course

A lot of men probably just go “reading is freaking gay dude yahhhh” and then use ChatGPT to do their business homework

Me and my friends read, but that’s pretty much the extent of book reading guys I know

I only know one dude who reads in my hometown. We’re friends but not super close friends. I think most men that I know are more likely to pick up a memoir on one of their role models instead of reading anything fantasy (which is sad because I would love male fantasy besties)

Men generally have a bias toward valuing brawn over brain, and a tendency to think with their dicks. They think if you read, you’re a nerd, if you’re a nerd you’re not cool, and if you’re not cool, you won’t get laid. That’s why there’s so few of them that enjoy things that make you use your brain, like reading.

I read a like 20ish books a year, mainly non fiction and poetry though. I think the only fictional works I've read this year were the tale of genji and consider phlebas. Most guys don’t read bc they weren’t rly socialized to it properly I think—that and time they would’ve spent reading going to other stuff like the internet/games/media where it’s still knowledge consumption of a kind, just not in books

All of the other comments so far are bringing up good points, but I don’t think it’s as deep as some of these make it out to be. I think plenty of dudes our age read when we were kids (I’m 22 for reference), but now we’re just too captivated by gaming, porn, gambling, and short form content in general to invest in reading. This problem isn’t as prevalent with women though

Mosr popular novels are romantasy, but it’s the type of writing made specifically for women, targeting how they work seperately. It’s like how guys like garbage action movies, and most girls don’t care. People see that that’s what readers are reading, and have no interest in

I’ve seen it in my friends who love fantasy and play video games too. They’ll trend towards literature that’s “productive” in their field of study rather than reading for fun, and when I or my other friend that reads try to suggest things, they just cling right back to some random business book

Idk, I find genuine joy and whimsy in non-fiction too. You get memoirs, quippy historians, deep spiritual insight, poetic resonance, and academics of highly specific persuasions—each as colorful as any fictional narrative, just in a different way. Most knowledge is productive imo, depends on the intent and takeaway ofc. I find business books fun too 💀

And I’m not saying you shouldn’t. I was trying to find a way to say “they’re all crypto bros” without saying it. There’s plenty of fun and interesting things out there, but I feel most men feel they NEED to stick to those business-y, historical, not immediately obviously fun books to not feel like a nerd or a target like you mentioned. Like the number of times I’ve wanted to just say “it’s ok to pick up a fantasy book with a fancy and colorful cover “

Oh woops that wasn’t you who said that nerd part, my bad. Regardless, it’s definitely part of the mysogeny problem.

…wait I’m so confused, hold up. Just so we’re on the same page, I’m on book 7 of the expanse and going to start God-Emperor of Dune after my current read. Are you suggesting Red Rising as an entry to slop or entry to Sci-Fi?
