I will forever hold the idea that books don’t have to be woke. It’s okay for books to use slurs and have a rape scene, etc if it furthers the plot. These are real things that happen and it doesn’t mean the author is supporting it. We shouldn’t ignore-

These things and act like they don’t happen, that’s not productive. And if you don’t like it then don’t read it. Just bc you don’t like it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist

People criticize Alchemised for this when it’s done in a critical manner but remain silent on books that actually do sexualize those topics and are not critically important to the plot or necessary in the slightest

I’m asking you to explain your statement a little better, because it doesn’t make sense to me.

There are plenty of good books that depict bad things. Handmaids tale, for example. I am not sure what your argument is?

This is true, but I think there's also so many that don't further the plot and aren't written respectfully and that's not okay. Also I gotta say I dislike using the word "woke" here, I just don't like it as a word in general, and it kind of implies a more liberal view when if anything, wanting to censor anything inappropriate is a conservative value. Books do have to be "woke" to me, because to me, woke is the opposite of censorship.

That might be what woke actually is. But that’s not how the general public uses that word. It’s okay for a book and a main character to not be politically correct IFFFFFF**** it’s for the plot and for discussion and not just the author pushing that idea. I say this bc I see people say they’re mad a book used the n word when it’s a comment on how black people are still treated, people saying rape should never be in a book, people saying they won’t read a book unless the author is a minority of-

first of all, yeah, that's is not how the general public uses it, but the way they use it is terrible. Woke has become this vapid nonsense buzzword that conservatives use to mean anything the don't like. I generally don't mind when words change and evolve in meaning, I know that's just how human language works, but this isn't a good change. It's become nothing. So I don't really love when it's used in the way the general public does.

Second of all, I don't think it's bad for someone to say they won't read a book unless the author is a minority. That's a personal preference, and wanting to specifically support those going through more struggle, that maybe you can relate to if you're a minority yourself, is not wrong to me. Like for me, when it comes to romance, I'm basically only interested in queer romance written by queer people. So I do that too, in a way.

I’m the same way! I’m also a queer person and I only read queer romance by queer people. I actively seek out OwnVoices books I believe that authenticity is best when directly from the original source. And yet people seem to get so mad at that and idk why. Anyways, just wanted to let you know that you’re not alone!! <3
