Does anyone else put a book on hold at the library that they actually have on the shelf? I feel so lazy and like the librarians are tired of me but sometimes I don’t have time and it’s so easy to go in and just grab the book off the shelf by the door 🫣

I work at a library, and we couldn’t care less, unless you’re requesting 20+ books at a time. It’s our job to go get the books, dw too much.

That’s literally what holds are for, tho. To make sure the book will be easily accessible and available to you, and that no one will check it out before you do. (I’m a librarian)

I think it’s more me just being lazy 🫣 I live in a small town and will literally put the book on hold on break at work and pick it up on my way home the same day, theres not much of a risk of someone else getting it first. I do appreciate everything you librarians do tho!

That’s ok too! Holds can be super short term. We know that navigating the stacks is not always easy, and some people have physical disabilities that prevent them from reaching or bending. I work at an academic library, and I know how tricky the Library of Congress classification system can be for people who are not used to it. Other systems like Dewey or even alphabetical by author last name can be tricky too.

So, basically, anything that makes our patrons lives easier is worth it!
