Need recs for books/authors like VE Schwab and RF Kuang. Nothing feels like it even measures up to them anymore and I need beautiful stories and writing that scratch that itch the way their books do

I love them too!! What’re your favorite things about both of them?? The more specific you are about what you’re looking for the easier it is to recommend :D

Blood Over Bright Haven is INCREDIBLE, especially if you liked the critique of elitism and colonialism in Babel you’ll love it. I read it in a day and a half then stared at a wall for another six hours lol

Robin Hobb has some of the most beautiful writing I’ve ever read. I recommend her books to everyone.

If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio! ML Rio has quite a few good books I’d recommend.

I think I really just love that the stories and writing don’t depend on tropes to further the plot or support the story. It feels like Kuang and Schwab know how to write creative and beautiful stories without needing the typical tropes that every other fantasy book seems to use

Okay!! Well if you’re looking for complex court politics and magic systems, I love the rook and rose trilogy, there’s so many layers and everyone has multiple identities and complicated motives. I’d also recommend anything by N K Jemisin (the fifth season especially) for complex women and worlds. To shape a dragons breath feels similar to the poppy war for the increasing darkness in a boarding school setting with dragons, and I love the mc Anequs. Alix E Harrow has exquisite writing

- the ten thousand doors of January is my personal fav but I haven’t read the everlasting yet. If you haven’t read Gideon the ninth yet, you MUST. She who became the sun for the war strategies, again like the poppy war. The raven scholar has a similar sense of humor to V E Scwab, and a sprawling, complicated plot. The bear and the nightingale has beautiful writing and the ferocity of Lila Bard. Blood over bright haven gets compared a lot to Babel bc they cover similar thematic territory

- and I really enjoyed both. The goblin emperor has an all-encompassing world with rich layers and new grammar styles I think fans of r f kuangs interest in linguistics would enjoy + one of my favorite mcs ever just trying to do right with what he’s been given. The last tale of the flower bride is a dark, lush, fairy-tale meets thriller. I know that’s a lot, I’m trying to be specific about the thematic ties I think you’d like, but feel free to ask questions!! I hope something here sticks out to
