thank you!! i always see people blaming celebrities for the way people think or do things and i’m just like that was a conscious choice and they have free will?? let’s not try to blame an easy party instead of taking accountability. i think people are having a major issue with accountability and integrity and morals these days
While yes I (also a victim) see what youre saying and agree 100%, to say that fiction/books/media have no impact on reality is very intentionally ignorant. Propoganda is the most clear example I could probably give. Its media, it normalizes an idea until you think its as normal as they want you to and now you listen and copy. Humans need to be accountable for themselves but they are also naturally inspired by their experience and surroundings.
The blaming of fiction on human actions has a deep history rooted in oppression and censorship. Video games make people v*olent. DnD makes people satan*sts. Romance books make women wh*res. This is not different. And dark media like this already exists. Now it’s lgbtq+ fiction is grooming*ng. I can’t even make this comment without censorship. And if you order the banning of x media, you’re pro censorship, whether it is well meaning or not.
I don’t like HA. I have political issues with it beyond it just not being at all my flavor of dark romance. But people have kinks that fiction allows them to explore and that is human. Some SA victims read dark material to process. The majority of people know fact from fiction. And you DONT HAVE TO WATCH if it isn’t for you. Consider the religious masses calling anything lgbtq+ evil and prnographic when they could mind their business. If it’s not for you, don’t consume it.
At the end of the day, this is about freedom of speech, but it is also about accountability. We don’t blame porn on rapists. We blame the rapist. And if you don’t, you are deeply misguided. Ultimately, HA being released as a film won’t turn men who don’t want to rape into rapists. Men who want to rape are already doing that. And it doesn’t mean people who enjoyed it want to be raped. It is disgusting that so many of you are agreeing with this take. But I hope you are just misinformed.
I am not saying they have no impact on reality, but HA is far from propaganda. If anything, people are ignoring the subversive q anon messaging in HA. The glorified SA is pretty front and center, but it’s also very obviously a kink. Same with 50 shades and many other erotic literature. The goal of HA is not to turn men into rapists and women into willful victims. And it is still horrific that someone in this group is implying that with tons of folks agreeing.
Thats not the goal of the book/story no but that doesnt mean it wont have that impact. Ive seen dozens of people already sharing stories about partners, situationships, etc, finding this book in their rooms and then thinking thats actually what they want and assaulting them. Even one is one too many and popularizing this story by spreading it into pop media is not a good decision regardless what the story's intention was. I do wanna be clear Im not trying to discredit or negate you
Normalization of rape in pop media desensitizes you. It absolutely will inspire people who have never wanted to rape someone. Desensitization = eh not so bad mentality. Thats whats happening with pop media rn and eating disorders. Its what happened with 13 reasons why and suicides. Its not an excuse its a literal psychological switch in perception.
