I‘ve never read Yellowface, but I read The Poppy War and had to DNF the next one. I said “ragebait” since she gives a genuinely interesting premise and began giving her characters depth and I got excited. Then she gave a bunch of flat characters and made her MC incredibly unlikable while filling her worldbuilding and plot with holes. One of my biggest disappointments.
Babel was even worse ragebait for me since it had good intentions but was executed horrendously. The characters were poorly written, and that’s a lot of people’s main criticisms, but what irked me most was the worldbuilding. The topics are decently obvious, but the world is terribly outfitted to deliver the message. It tries to be an allegory but fails since the metaphor and what it represents are both present in the book, and the metaphor itself causes SO many plot holes.
