Reading smut does not make someone a porn addict and if y’all are gonna keep bringing this up, so am I. There are tons of healthy reasons that people read smut. And having a preference makes no one an addict. Stop tossing that word around casually.

Smut is ONE ELEMENT in entire books and judging people who read smutty books in broad sweeps does not make you better than said readers. It just makes you sound 12. Smut and porn are fundamentally different but even if they are the same, it’s actually okay for adults to consume adult material. We don’t need to go back to puritanical BS that primarily targets women. I’m ace and enjoy books with smut because I enjoy seeing every aspect of relationships. There are many like me.

Judging others will not make you happier or prettier. Enjoy what you enjoy, but throwing an ADDICT label on reading preferences is not only shitty and overreaching, but it also waters down the severity of actual addiction. Talk to someone with a real addiction. It’s not cutesy bookmarks and kindle sleeves. It’s serious and life-altering and damaging. It’s disgusting to throw that label at people you don’t know.

I’d rather people be reading smut which only abstractly has the potential to harm real people (via sexual stereotyping and romanticizing of SA) than watching real, actual porn which is potentially snuff vids that can be real people being harmed and SAed (and which definitely promotes rape culture and sexual stereotyping)

Banger after banger after banger (pun intended). Can’t wait to see someone quote this post to argue with you instead of just stating their comments here.

Some people read smut to learn about their own preferences in a safe way. Some read it to recover from trauma. Some read it for no reason besides the fact that it exists in the book they are otherwise reading. Some don’t enjoy it and read books without it. WHO CARES what other people read and why they read it? You will be so much fucking happier not worrying about who is reading what. It’s giving asking trans folks what is in their pants. It’s none of your business. You’re weird for obsessing.

I thought the argument was regarding people who say they can only read books with smut meaning if the book didn’t have smut they wouldn’t read it

Which is their right! Some people only read extreme horror. Some people only read hard scifi. Why is someone’s reading preference damning in only one scenario? We only have so much time on this earth, so I say read what you enjoy while you can. Addiction is something completely outside a mere preference. It is damaging and affects one’s ability to function daily. It’s gross throwing that word around at an entire reading group.
