TONS of old, historic, and irreplaceable books too. They use a book-scanning machine that cuts the spines off of books to more easily scan the pages (which is extra stupid cuz we already have the machines that can do it without destroying them)

I work in archive management at my uni, this is standard practice and can easily be undone by rebinding the book. It’s been used for years to digitize books.

Yes, there are machines that can digitize books without chopping their binding, but they just plain don’t work as well, and often miss text from older books that have degraded enough that the text is in the spine. it’s normal stuff tho

Imagine if I took a vegetable peeler and skinned you just to examine the anatomy of the muscles, then re-skinned you and sent you on your way
