Hot take but I tend not to pick up books less than 300-400 pages, especially if it’s a standalone. Like how am I supposed to connect with the characters/world and care what happens to them in that short of time? Long books/series ftw

Although I guess this only applies to fantasy/sci fi, you don’t have to describe world building with the characters in like romance/realistic fiction books. But I only read sci fi/fantasy so I’m sticking with my opinion, tho I could’ve specified a little 🫠

I absolutely feel you there. Though, at the same time, I think that there is a certain art to saying a lot with very few words that isn’t all too common in authors. I’m thinking of the famous sci fi short story writers of the previous century. Both are good imo

Ok I was about to say… some of the greatest works of fiction are around 200 pages lol

I get you with the fantasy thing though. Objectively, not a lot happened in the 1,200 pages of the Stormlight Archives book I just read, but I would die for some of the characters, so a decent trade off.

Exactly, stormlight, wheel of time, heck even the realm of the elderlings tho those are a little shorter. For some books I just need more. I can’t imagine less pages in those, it already seems like not enough happens
