Hey y’all I’m doing reading research for a personal project and I need recommendations for Gothic Horror à la Dracula or similar vibe fantasy novels like Empire of the Vampire (reading that rn). Looking at world building and characters mostly.

Oh and Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire may be worth looking into. It’s gothic horror and vampires while being a little more modern than Dracula (but not too modern as it’s from the 70s)

For classic gothic horror lit I’d recommend Carmilla (lesbian vampire, predated Dracula) and Frankenstein. For modern gothic horror I’ve heard very good things about The Starving Saints by Caitlin Starling though that’s more medieval gothic horror.

Oh and check out Shirley Jackson too if you want some supernatural gothic horror. The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle are two classics. They’ll generally be more focused on characters than outside world building but yeah

I wasn’t sure if they had to involve vampires or not so I tried to include some recs both with and without. Hope this helps!

Edgar Allan Poe is also a classic for gothic horror. If you’re interested in juxtaposing newer vs older gothic horror for your research, there’s a recent retelling of his story ‘The fall of the house of usher’ called ‘What moves the dead’ by T. Kingfisher. I thought it was decent, but a little short

Lovecraft country might work. Although obviously it’s more lovecraftian horror than straight up gothic

In case you come across it, I would NOT recommend Lucy Undying by Kiersten White, it’s advertised as a gothic sapphic retelling of Dracula focusing on Lucy, but it was pretty bad in many aspects IMO.

They don’t have to, those examples just happen to be the ones I own/read/am reading, but thank you!
