ppl get clowned on for asking if a book has smut before they read it but i also google/ask it and it’s not bc it HAS to have smut for me to enjoy it. i just like to know what to expect. the hate feels so unnecessary when it’s just preparing urself

You’re literally an exception, the people (at least on TikTok) are asking because they need to have smut and that’s embarrassing

if people can basically spoil the book by telling you every trope it has then we should be able to know if it has smut or not like 😭😭😭😭

Ok but I NEED yall to use better judgment 😭 Only ask when it’s explicitly a romance or romantasy

Download fable and usually it will tell you if each book has it in there and it will also tell you the level of it

You would be surprised. I unfortunately found out that a historical fiction that had no branding as romance whatsoever had explicit sex scenes. It was very unnerving

i’m someone who can take or leave smut, but i don’t get the issue with people seeking it out? like we all have things we look for in books. no point in being embarrassed tbh

Having a reading preference isn’t embarrassing. Y’all need to grow up.

I think there needs to be some sort of code for people who are asking if a book is spicy because they want to avoid it. I tend to automatically assume that the people asking “is there spice??” are not going to be interested in the book if the answer is “no” lol.

Which I’m now realizing is OP’s point lmao. Sorry OP, I’m one of the clowners 😭 I’ll be more thoughtful in the future

first of all how can you know that EVERYONE who asks is asking because they only read smutty books? second of all, does a book containing smut decrease its value as a book? why is it embarrassing for an individual to have a reading preference?

you can also find out on storygraph a lot of the time by checking the trigger warnings!

Also how many sex scenes does a book need in it to be considered smut? How detailed do they have to be?

Like this whole genera of books is very subjective because also what qualifies a book as dark romance? What about if a book is a fantasy romance is it more fantasy or more romance or is it its own thing?

People whose only reading preference is smut IS embarrassing. They’re consuming it like porn and that is lame I fear😭 they can do whatever they want, but I’m not going to act like having to read smut is normal

It’s actually major loser behavior to worry about what other people are reading and judge people based on assumptions. Do you spend time thinking about what people are doing in the bedroom while reading? The bathroom? It’s creepy. No one has to read anything, but they are choosing to read and have a preference about what they consume. Let adults be adults and worry about what YOU read.

People can read whatever they want, but I promise you that thinking an overconsumption of sexual material is odd really isn’t the craziest take in the world.
