i think they’re talking about like fmcs who are “different” and don’t wear dresses or skirts but instead wear pants like for example in shield of sparrows

It really depends on the setting. Like in a regency type setting, that is a huge part of who they are in that it shows they are not afraid to break hard coded societal rules. In fantasy where people have the choice, it’s weirder, but for a lot of history, women were very much not allowed to wear pants.
