No literally same. I decided to start abercrombies books, began with the devils. It was fun but I wanted to see what everyone was raving about w/ first law. Ngl I was a little disappointed, still good, just a lot more character driven than I anticipated. Book 2 worked a lot better for me, but from the “lord of grimdark” I also expected more “grim” and “dark.” I think theres even more in the devils, which is a weaker novel imo. Maybe in his other works??
Exactly my thoughts as well. I read the devils first too and def thought it was darker than the blade itself but still not like as dark as I would’ve expected from something whose nickname is lord grimdark lol. Idk maybe it’ll kinda come together more as his writing develops and I get further into the series considering there’s 9 of them but i just expected way more considering how I’ve seen ppl talk about them. Like I’ve seen a ton of ppl compare it to ASOIAF which (again just based off my
impression of the blade itself) is def way more grimdark than first law. Even something like red rising although doesn’t necessarily fit the aesthetic of grimdark def embodies the tone and spirit of grimdark significantly better imo. Although maybe I’ve just read way too make warhammer 40K books and my perspective is kinda skewed idk lol
