How do you get yourself to start reading books that you’re intimidated by? (Aka heard are amazing/foundational/iconic) I have several that I bought and own but just can’t get myself to pick up. I’m sick of reading slop tho

One thing I do w books like this is I avoid buying them lol, usually when I buy a book I’ll go in person to a bookstore and flip thru and read a few pages from the beginning, middle, and end of the book just to kinda sample the content. If it’s something I know for a fact I wouldn’t read then I won’t buy it. But then I get major FOMO bc I didn’t read a super popular book lmao

This is me with a lot of popular books of booktok bc sometimes I feel like bc they are so overhyped they aren’t actually good and everyone is just going with the trend of liking them. What I do when I really want to read one though is look through the tropes to see if I’d actually like it. I also go on story graph to see the percentages of like character development or how the book is paced and if I don’t like it, I don’t read. Another good thing is maybe reading the book online (kindle, Libby)

I read one chapter and leave the book alone. Nothing more for that day, even if it’s deeply interesting.

Then buying the book either after a couple chapters or when you finish so you know that you actually liked it.
