Reading Assassin’s Apprentice and I have a question but it involved minor spoilers so I’m going to ask in the comments

I just finished chapter 5 where Fitz steals the dagger from the king and drives it into Chade’s shelf but I’m so confused as to the meaning of these events

So Fitz says he refuses to steal from the king so Chade gets mad at him, but then the king admits that was his test of loyalty. I get that. So then what’s the significance of Fitz taking the knife while the king is watching and then giving it to Chade? does my question make sense?

It's a scene that shows Fritz's character. He won't do anything against his king but he also gets the job done. Or at least that's my interpretation

Ah so like once he had permission perse he felt comfortable doing it?

The way that I interpreted it, was as a mini act of revenge. BUT also I felt that it nodded towards the fact that Fitz doesn’t have TRUE loyalty towards the King, but towards other people more. Like Chade. But that was just my interpretation. There is also a line that’s later in the book that made me think so. I just started Royal Assassin after finishing this one, so it’s still new in my mind lol

Ah that also makes a lot of sense. Idk I feel stupid for asking lol but it just felt very specific and deliberate and I couldn’t tell why

And then I guess the king didn’t care because Fitz didn’t take anything behind his back?

Hmmm… depends. It could be that, but I remember that his eyes widened when he did it. I think he didn’t care bc he wasn’t honoring his end of the agreement?? I forget if they had the agreement yet (and it’s not really a spoiler) but it’s basically “do you think I’m taking care of you?”. This might be a way of showing that Fitz at that time would be willing to do things he normally wouldn’t (go against the king) if the king went against their agreement? Or maybe I’m just over analyzing lol

Huh that makes sense. I’m just around the part where Fitz’s dad dies so no betrayal yet but I sense it coming
