Yes your “spicy” romance books are LITERALLY porn. If there are explicit sex scenes then it’s porn. Which is cool, enjoy them! But let’s not pretend that it’s something different just cuz it’s squished between vanilla filler & a pretty cover.

It is porn, but admittedly (and this frustration isn’t directed at you op) I’m annoyed with the people who think it’s JUST porn. That also exists, but most books have a good chunk of plot too. I’ve got a patty on my cheeseburger, but there’s also the rest of the sandwich that I enjoy. I don’t just wanna eat ground beef

Yes but I’m gonna keep calling it smut because when people say ‘this book is porn’ it’s usually because they want to ban a book from a school library and I don’t think that labeling books as pornographic is conducive when considering that.

it definitely is porn but i feel like it's usually different than visual porn. the industry and atmosphere of visual porn is harmful and gives people who watch it unrealistic expectations about what to expect during sex. it dehumanizes the women involved and strips the characters in it of any real identity. a lot of it also glorifies harmful fetishes or stereotypes. whereas "smut" has at least some form of plot or at least gives you an insider on the character's emotions to humanize them.

I am so okay with reading my smutty books. Still, I definitely won’t deny the fact that it is reading porn. That being said I will continue to read my porn and dive into a good fantasy or thriller now and then to clear my mind.

That means everyone should agree that banning porn is a dangerous censorship. If they take away visual porn, they will take away any porn.

romantasy is even worse because I’ll see multiple books/comics that is just actual fetish content while being rated/marketed towards minors. it’s genuinely rancid.

The main issue with it is that if someone says a boon is porn, they believe every page is descriptions of dicks and choking and such. No, most of these books are deep involved stories with amazing plots and then there’s a chapter where they have sex and then the rest of the story continues. Unless you’re going out of your way to find a couple specific books that are just sex every chapter, it’s a smut books. It is a form of sexually explicit material but mainstream porn is very different

Remind me why we care? I understand your point, but it’s still reading and this conversation from its origin has been used as a way to negate women’s reading. Smut is just the term to classify books that contain that material, but contain does not mean it makes up the entire book. I don’t understand why we have to keep having this conversation when there’s no reason for it.

No one in this comment section (or with a brain) will deny it’s porn, but porn in a different format will have different effects on the brain as opposed to visual porn. That being said, I don’t support only reading porn; some of these bitches gotta broaden their horizons.

The biggest issue is that you say porn and people think of pornhub and then pornhub in a book.

If you ever watch a full production of a porn movie, they often have plots too. Older ones would sometimes be an hour of plot/setup and 30 minutes of porn.

It doesn’t negate women’s reading 🙄 I have exactly TWO books in my personal possession that are pornographic. The other 300+ have zero explicit sex scenes or no sex at all. And if you want to read porn then go for it. You looking down on it is your own problem. Also I never said it was the entire book. This is a book community so please at least learn to read before coming here😅

Please reread my comment. Advocates of book banning label any book under the sun as pornographic so that they can remove books they don’t like from school libraries. Hence why I don’t like to use the term ‘pornographic’ to refer to books, because it’s been hijacked and has a new meaning now.

A book plot is much more involved than even an hour long porn video. You get insights into the personality, inside feelings, and the plot of a book (especially multi series ones) are gonna be so much more involved with most of the time, smaller porn to plot ratio.

I think smut (esp “dark romance”) tends to glorify harmful fetishes too but at least you have to engage with the story to actually get to the smut. And like u said it’s not harming any one directly and usually a lot less pedophilia

You need to get a grip. Rape and CP are illegal already. Consensual porn shouldn't be banned, and banning it in any form opens the doors to more censorship.

what kind of policy do you think would be able to "ban porn" and do so effectively, without downstream consequences to people already in that industry, and without inadvertently banning other things?

Brazzers is not the only type of porno movies out there. Also the clips that get put on pornhub of pretty much any movie are only quick clips of plot (if any) then straight into the sex. The best example of this is hentai. There are hentai shows with full seasons and actual plots and out of every 20-30 min episode maybe 4 minutes will be sex. It’s still porn.

is that not talked about? i feel like the definition of smut is books/writing that's sexually explicit. "smut" is to "porn" as "primate" is to "mammal" imo.

Movie porn is focused on the male gaze which can be a lot mor problematic because it can be absolutely anything like CP or nonconsentual. Book “porn” is more in depth and has a buildup which is actually what many women prefer and it’s focused on the female gaze which is more about being loved and cared for while the movies can be more violent and are just meant to be a quick jerk and they’re done

It’s definitely a sub genre but it’s a lot less sexual content compared to movie porn the smut I read is like 3-4 chapters out of like 30 are actually full sex scenes anything else is a bit of staring at each other or a 1 page long buildup and kiss. Yes there are some books that are more focused on that but I feel like smut is more diverse than people are making it out to be and I usually skim any sex I come across because I don’t want to read about the sex I want the cute and loving moments

Okay okay what if we eradicate how the visual porn industry currently is and rebuild it. This time visual porn being a lot similar to smut. The only reason why online visual porn is the way it is- is because the way the patriarchy has taught men to view sex is really fucked up. We dismantle the patriarchy, redefine porn and have amazing solo sex and even better partnered sex. It will only take about 50 years but we just gotta lock in.

upvote 8 downvote

Most if not all visual porn dehumanizes the woman. And that’s the problem here. The Patriarchal sexual experience is all about getting off on having power over someone instead of mutually engaging in an act. That’s why CP is so prevalent and mostly why rape happens. Look I’m not here to yuck bitches yums but there is no way you’re gonna sit here and tell me that visual porn is a better representation of sex compared to smutt because then ima just assume that you’re a man who can’t read….

So I've read some pretty fucked up written porn... a lot of women have CNC kinks which are worse than most porn is legally allowed to show. So again how is it that you can be an arbiter of good porn and especially when you only focus on the visual porn.

Anonymous replying to -> #10 1h

Fair enough, though I’d argue that those women with those Kinks are dealing with some fucked up shit that should be addressed. But I’d also argue CNC is still consensual… but that debate is similar to the “is water wet” debate. I’d also say that written Kinky sex is a lot less common than visual kinky sex but I could be wrong. Do I personally think I should be the ultimate supreme morality arbiter. (Duh) but we are both adults and we know the difference between good and bad.

These types of discussion are difficult, because there is the obvious question of “where do we draw the line”, and I do admit my first comment in this thread-I was kind of joking (kind of not), but I was just personally saying that I think visual porn would be a lot better if it was similar to MOST written smut. Just saying… 🤷🏾‍♀️ how about we try it and you can listen to me say I told you so in 50 years 😉
