Okay this might be weird but sometimes I like YA romances because I like the lack of sex scenes. Sometimes I just need a romance that is more about the emotional connection than the nonstop horny that can sometimes appear in adult books

The emotional connection is the part that’s actually enjoyable to read about, in my opinion. Reading smut scenes feels like being sick and your roommate brought over their partner.

honestly yeah. once people started reading for smut, authors started prioritizing that instead of the emotional connnection. now you have two of the most boring characters with “incredibly, mind blowing smut” like rewind pls

No same! Cause the current state of romance novels, the author focuses on (mid) sex scenes, and then the plot, dialogue, and continuity are straight ass

Yess, I totally agree with this. I don’t mind a FEW steamy scenes, but when I feel like they’re overshadowing the main plot or emotional connection, it’s too much

A lot of the time I feel like oh I want this book to get some spicy parts. And then I get to the spicy parts and wish it would have just been some loving connected intimacy (not necessarily sexual) or developing a deeper connection instead. I don’t know. I read it and I’m always let down lol.

everyone should read the jinni and the golem, there is some sexual content but it's far from the emphasis. the emotional interplay in the novel made me think harder about feelings than i maybe ever have in my life before

writing 250 pages of sex scenes with 100 pages of excuses to get to the next sex scene is much, much easier than writing 50-60 pages of sex scenes that are meaningful elements of a larger exploration of the bond between characters and dynamics between personalities

even for the best writers, you can pump out the former and make a ton more money than you can by painstakingly building the latter

As someone who does write for a hobby, I physically cannot force my fingers to write smut scenes. I’d argue that’s my sense of perfectionism forbidding me from taking the cheap path and actively avoiding creating a meaningful story. While making a living is amazing as a writer, the only way you’ll ever be remembered for your writing is by making books that mean something.

i feel like this isn't really perfectionism as much as elitism icl

I don’t think it is at all. Anyone can write cheap, meaningless smut books so the illiterate book tok girlies can use it as porn, but writing something that actually has substance is much harder, but more memorable and I’m sure there’s a lot more pride in that kind of work
