Should libraries stop children from checking out smut? Like have a rated R type of rating similar to movies in theaters

I think that they should but I’m torn, because that could open the door to more strict censorship and that’s a very slippery slope.

Mine already does. There’s a small section of specifically raunchy stuff that has a code that cards connected a minor can’t checkout. However if you don’t register your kid’s card as a minor when you get it/connect it to your account…..well….you know

If it’s an obvious young child, yes, you can easily guide them to more appropriate material. But if it’s an ambiguous teen, then it should be up to a parent, assuming they are there. If not, then if you don’t literally know their exact age, it’s better to let people read. My MOM checked me out the True Blood series when I was a young teen not knowing the content herself. We had respectful convos about the content, and I’m glad she let me read it bc I found out that type of lit wasn’t for me.

There’s also the issue of kids just going and reading the books at the library if you don’t let them check it out. It’s really hard to enforce most book restricting without it becoming a hard censorship issue.

Ig the way I understand it is it would work the way 1 said, where if a parent checks something out for you then you can read it (the same way you can walk into a rated r movies if you have a parent with you). Do kids sneak into rated r movies or watch them online themselves? Yeah, but they were gonna find a way to do that anyway, the barrier to entry is more just for the avg kid that couldn’t care one way or the other and generally dissuade them which does the trick for most
