The TLDR is Piper keeps having to rebrand herself because she keeps doing things like sending her fans to attack reviewers she disagrees with. She also is manipulative with her marketing in that she will cry on camera when her sales are low to guilt people. There is also racist undertones in the book surrounding the Black character taking beatings for the white FMC, and some more issues that involve a bigger spoiler for the book.

I wish I could do spoiler text like on discord lol but anyway. I used to follow Piper on TikTok for her folklore content, but it very quickly emerged that it was like her third rebrand after other questionable behavior. When the book came out, she and her editor were very uncool about a two star review she got. Which is never okay. Authors should never be interacting negatively with reviewers. Reviews are for readers, not authors. So that just rubbed me wrong even before learning abt the content

oh my gosh i literally had no idea about any of that. try to stay off of book tok because of how toxic it can be and also i dont tend to follow authors that much but regardless i think this is gonna influence me to start doing more research on an author

Nah that’s so fair, I haven’t used booktok in a while not for any reason, but bc I just don’t do tiktok in general much now with a business to run. I will say it’s pretty easy to gauge from Goodreads reviews when an author has done something ethically questionable. If you check reviews for this book, people are pretty upfront about the author’s behavior as well as the issues with the book. They’re also helpful if you’re ever uncertain a book used AI/ has an AI cover.
