I will do it when I feel that I am reading the right book for the overall theme of my life at that time

Depends on the book. If there’s crucial symbolism and themes or important lines I have to otherwise I’ll get overwhelmed by the need to remember it all and not actually read it 😅. Like for the picture of Dorian Gray I constantly had a highlighter and pencil with me since for important lines/themes and for the Tales of the city series since there’s a lot of references to things that were relevant in the 70s/80s I didn’t know it was easier to write what it was

I lowkey read on my phone a lot (I agree it’s not as tangible or aesthetically pleasing, but it’s very convenient) so I’ll write notes on my phone. But when I’m reading a physical book and wanting to make notes I’ll just write them on sticky notes or a separate notebook. I want to be able to read things as freshly as possible if I return to them so I can see whether I view things differently/pick up on something new

For my favorite books I always read a book 2 times and the third time I annotate it with all my thoughts and it makes my books special to me and I have a color coded system for it. It just makes me happy

Same, it makes reading feel like a chore. It’s why I stopped reading a book that I began by annotating for a few months and just picked back up again because I said “fuck it” and stopped annotating as I read
