I think it’s because those series tend to fall into junk food reads (not saying that in a negative way—easy and popular books have their place in the lit world and often get folks into reading). But they’re easy, and so is AI. Consumers who are not also creatives are not going to understand or care abt the artistry that goes into crafting a novel, and same with fanart. It’s easy to consume junk. You can be a talentless consumer and push buttons to make shiny things w/out critical thought.
I think it’s also because of how insanely popular they are. Like I feel that I read a bunch of popular series, but nonreaders don’t know them. Nonreaders def know about these fandoms, and I bet a lot of it (tho not all) is also people who haven’t read the books trying to make content to draw in views/purchases from the fan base just due to the popularity and demand. They see a market
That, and people are selfish. They don’t care about destroying the environment. Many folks just want to be mindlessly entertained. But the good news is that by and large the book community, which is generally more educated as a baseline, is against AI across the board. Anytime AI art is posted here, it gets downvoted to the ninth circle of hell. There will always be exceptions, especially with those who are immature or primarily junk food book readers, but overall, folks are against slop.
