I’m reading a romance book and the author/fmc keeps saying that the mmc is wearing a tobaggan instead of a beanie/toque. A tobaggan is a sled not a fucking toque.

The author is likely from the south in the US

From Amazon: Mens Winter Beanie Hat Warm Knit Cuffed Plain Toboggan Ski Skull Cap (3 Patterns) It's probably not correct but I have heard beanie-hats called toboggans all of my life. I was surprised the first time I heard someone refer to it as a beanie.

I have never heard the word toque 😭 I’m from the Midwest, we typically say beanie but if you say toboggan to describe a hat you’ll get looked at funny but we’ll know what you’re talking about

I agree. It's a southern thing. I think it's changing though, I hear more people refer to them as beanies now. The only thing I have heard called a beanie before 15 years ago were those little caps they used to have college freshman where around the 1900s. I'm not sure why they did that. I guess so upperclassman would help them find their way around campus? I don't really know.
