I asked my mom to get me a book for Christmas and she got me the “Shadow and Bone” trilogy. Does anyone know if it’s any good? It seems like a generic fantasy romance series and I wanted to know if I’m wrong and if the writing is strong.

Sorry but (imo) it’s exactly a generic fantasy romance! The writing is fine but not great. The author does have a sequel duology in the same world that is genuinely very good though.

I love the grisha verse. However the original trilogy is very classic ya chosen one. The world building is great, the characters do fit the cliches though. However, the six of crows duology set in the same world is fabulous

Ditto on the other responses, you are absolutely correct. It’s not terrible, but depending on how much you still read ya is kind of a factor as well. If you’re not used to similar writing/style it can feel a little immature at times (which no shade, it is ya) but sometimes not what you’re looking for. And the second book is sooo slow and anticlimactic it’s painful. First and third were better. Six of Crows is the best

Agree with what everyone else says. Reading it will give you some context for the world, but six of crows is actually magnificent and from the same author
