As a Muslim woman, I have mad respect for Guillermo Del Toro for choosing not to include that garbage Islamophobic plot in Frankenstein. I also like the characters calling us Muslims instead of Mohammadeans. Thank you, Sir. May you have a lovely November.

I’m such a massive Del Toro fan. He always makes heat and I’m so happy he decided to do this film

Could you expand on how the novel was Islamophobic? I remember the character Safie but I haven't read it in a minute so my memory is really fuzzy on this, but I'd really like to be informed on this

Just because you used to historically call us Mohammadeans, doesn’t mean it was ok. It’s unacceptable and offensive. You’re gross.

If this is meant to be Islamophobic that’s really gross of you. I’m a Christian but no religion is “right”, it’s a choice. People have free will, also history has shown that every religion has groups that will subjugate and hurt others. In the case of Muslims, the crusades were a horrific act done by Christians who believed they were entitled to take something in the name of religion.

Why you acting like I was born in the 1700s? I'm not, just pointing out historical revisionism will be exposed for the lies it fuels

I’m a Muslim woman whose religion was vilified in Frankenstein. While I do understand that Mary Shelley did it to call out religious coercion as she could not do it against the church because they would persecute her, it’s still not ok. There is offensive language in the book that we don’t have to tolerate in the adaptions. What’s not clicking???

By the way, I am planning to write a retelling of Frankenstein where Safie has a less offensive depiction. She falls in love with Victor’s creation. They’re both Muslim. It’s going to be a romance that will explore issues such as racism, misogyny (in both the the west and the east). It will be a tale of love and liberation. I’m going to definitely include the themes that Shelley included regarding Frankenstein and his creation. But I just want a story where Safie doesnt have an icky depiction.

“Reading is for entertainment” are you stupid? Reading is political. Books can be entertaining but there’s also a message in every book. Just because you don’t get them doesn’t mean that applies to everyone

The novel was islamophobic because Safie was being forced into marriage and she explicitly talked about how the religion orders women to be infantalized slaves. Islam prohibits forced marriage.
