I’m gonna be honest…I’ve read three different translations of the Odyssey. It’s very bloated at some points, which can be chalked up to it being original an oral story. But still, we give it way too much credit.

Judging a nearly 3,000-year-old oral epic by modern bestseller standards is such a strange metric. You can find it boring, but that’s different from saying it gets “way too much credit. Few works have had the literary and cultural influence of The Odyssey. Its reputation comes from what it contributed to literature.
