Honestly just read what sounds interesting to you. Don’t listen to all the people who think you’re only getting the “reading experience” by only reading classics or heavy fiction. Romances are completely fine, just keep reading and your comprehension/speed will come with time. If you want to branch into other genres, great, but if not, that’s fine too! Just the repetition will pay off by itself, keep reading and don’t let others overwhelm you
Practice. That’s it. The more you read the better you are. Don’t stick it out if you lose interest either. There are so many unread interesting books waiting for you. Don’t rush through anything! If you have to read a paragraph 4 times, who cares? I think those AR reading competitions in elementary school ruined it for so many of us.
One thing I do while reading, and I actually really enjoy it, is I have a little sticky note next to me and anytime I come across a word I’m not too sure about I write it down to look up later or stop reading to look it up really quickly. And as for reading in general, I found that using an app to track my reading helps encourage me to read more and read consistently. I wish you the best of luck!!
If you’re an audio learner (and you didn’t mind taking the time), you can read a few passages/chapters/sections of a book at a time then go back and follow with the audio to help you gather both concepts and proper pronunciation of unknown words. Also, rereading really helps! You don’t have to immediately reread, but coming back to a book later can give you more insight. And as everyone else says: practice. Practice makes progress!
This this this! And I say this as an English and Literature MA. There are great classics that’ll make you think, and there are some that are grossly overhyped. I’ve read romance books with philosophy in them. I’ve made horror that has made me weep. Read whatever you’re enjoying, and branch out naturally. If you’re into romance and really do want to branch out, you could always try fantasy, lit fic, etc that has a romance subplot. Just keep reading and you’ll find you expand organically 💕
I truly think the education system has taken a turn for the worse. I never really learned phonics and wasn’t tested on grammar either. I think they assumed that we would just know it? I’ve never been a strong reader or writer and I want to change it but it’s been very overwhelming. It’s pretty discouraging to admit that I’m 21 and don’t feel like I’m as good as a reader or writer as I should be :/ but I do want to learn how. Thank you so much for the advice!
My mom is a teacher, so my perspective might be a bit different. She says parents today don’t do their part at home to help their kids. They just drop them off at school expecting teachers to perform miracles but don’t prioritize extra practice at home. I learned a lot at school and at home. We read together constantly. Every single day whether I had softball practice or not. Sports never took priority.
I will say that I did spend a lot of time outside of school doing practice problems and summer ready books but I still struggled a lot, specially with reading and writing. It’s consistently been my worst subject for as long as I can remember. I wouldn’t say my mom didn’t read with me but it wasn’t very often. And then I ended up learning that I’m an auditory learner and ended up depending on audiobooks and similar stuff to get by. I’m actively working on that
I listen to audio as well. I’ve always got 2 books going, a physical one and an audio one. I listen in my car because I have a commute. I think I am not as attentive with audiobooks though so I go for easy reads. Just keep practicing. A love for reading is a habit that has to be developed. It won’t happen overnight.
